New York ComicCon part 1 The Overall Experience
Conventional wisdom would declare I exhausted too much time thinking about New York ComicCon 09. Way More time than I should of. Well I think I recovered from 2009’s New York Comic Con, Mostly. I felt Inspired to get back to the gym more and try to lose more weight. ComicCon is a busy busy event, Lots of Panels to queue up for and try and get into. People to talk to, games to try and movie to watch, and oh yeah, there are some comics too.
I was Not Impressed By DC or Marvel. They really did not give a lot of news. With Old Story lines just ending and new ones are already under way, the big two could just report on side story stuff and fluff. Dark Horse was best of show even though. I did not see their panel but their announcement of STAR WARS: Invasion was really interesting to me. The rest of the Comic Companies had very little that was ‘new news’ to me, they were just showing what they just released or talking about stuff already underway.
I went into this convention with the hopes of streamlining my comic pull list and also hunting down information on the future of comics. I ended up with information overload, but mostly the wrong information. Only wrong because I was seeking information on the status of Diamond Comics, but their people would not talk about anything bad to a lowly person like me. Oh I did finally manage to streamline my comic pull list a week after comic con was over, more on that in art 2 of this.
The Recession is defiantly taking its toll on the industry. The economy had a definite effect on the show, out of all four New York Comic Cons’ , this was the one show where at points I heard Gir, from invader Zim, singing the doom song. The Comic book industry is starting to prove that its needs a reinvention. Things seemed scaled back just slightly in the comic portion of the show. I will be paying close attention an watching out for a portable comic book devices that is not and iphone, or comic book version if the Amazon kindle.
New York ComicCon Shows signs that it’s leading to become and event similar to San Diego Comic Con After the con. The Focus ever slipping away from comics and into new media, sci-fi and games . Cant tell what the future holds. Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2010 event, taking place right back at the Javits Center, October 8-10 Possibly Merging with the Anime Festival which will be 2009 – SEPT 25-27 – JACOB JAVITS CENTER for other convention news check out www.mediumatlarge.net.
