The School of Anything Goes Eclectic Geeking Photo-fu

“There is Defiantly no logic to my behavior” Me, an Eclectic Geek on photography, well something resembling the lowest forms of amateur photography, yep I pretty much, suck. I have a lot to learn, and few resource to do it with, but with the gear I do have, I am having an amusing time with it.It’s a learning experience .

At the moment I am, more often than not and before a live audience, taking pictures with a 6 megapixel Cannon PowerShot S3 IS with all its base parts. It’s a Fun Camera to learn with. I’ve taken HUNDREDS
of pictures with it in the past couple of weeks since its predecessor committed sideways for the sake of my art. In the before times, I took photos with a point and shoot Kodak 10 megapixel V1003. It was a convenient camera to carry around. But now since the upgrade I am not sure if I want to go back to a point and shot. With the S3, I found a new level of detail. Getting some new lenses would be intresting a Wide Converter and Close up Lens(hello eBay)) even though it’s way outside my budget.

Location Location Location is the fun of my practice. I have been trying to take pictures in as many places as possible to build up my Photo-fu experience points. From New York city to that scenic Over look on Route 78, I am enjoying the variety of the pictures I am taking When it comes to subject of my Photos, anything goes. It’s the best way. I am just trying to make the best of what is in front of me at the time. One of my Main Subjects in Photography, though, is and will be beer and anything I do involving Comic Books, 2 of my favorite activities.

One of m
y favorite things that came out of taking beer photo’s is learning about macro photography, I swear I have been through at least 10 homemade Macro Studios, my last one failing miserably to over complication and my basic stupidity. Keeping it simple works the best.

One thing I learned about so far and try to use is ‘The Rule of Thirds’. Imaginary lines are drawn dividing the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. Some camera’s actually have to grid in the settings. You place important elements of your composition where these lines intersect… Using the Rule of Thirds helps produce nicely balanced easy on the eye pictures. Also, as you have to position things relative to the edges of the frame it helps get rid of ' tiny subject surrounded by vast empty space' syndrome…

Light/White balance can be a pain but I just use the auto setting for this on the Camera and I am not at the point where I can do this manually. Presets help also when lazy modes hit or you need consistency. I had a problem with some beer pictures that just came out wrong because I they were not consistent in their lighting.

Have Fun, that’s what I am trying to do the most with my photo’s, and take good beer pictures, too, a toy here and there also. As i get better and learn more things, it should be fun
